My Style & Travel: Big Island Traditions of Refuge

Paradise is known as the Place of Refuge on the Big Island of Hawaii. Pristine sand, ancient artifacts, gorgeous palm trees, and friendly park rangers make for beautiful, adventurous day. In ancient times, these grounds were a place of forgiveness if you had committed a crime. If you reached this place before the king's guards caught you, you would be absolved of all wrongdoing. To enjoy this magical place (a second time--couldn't resist returning), I wore a lovely romper with a crocheted lace upper and pom pom trim. This romper was perfect with a big sunhat and caged sandals. For this spring and summer, rompers are definitely one of the stylish choices to look pretty while staying comfortable.

Another way to stay comfortable on a warm tropical day is to have a cold treat. Now, don't ask for a snow cone or a slushie when you are on the Big Island. The locals recommend that you try shave ice from Scandi's, the nickname for Scandinavian Shave Ice located across from the Hulihe'e Palace on Alii Drive in Kailua Kona. Scandi's has been a Kona landmark for 25 years. The company is renown for its shave ice (shave, not shaved) having the consistency of new fallen snow, not crunchy or granular ice, and delicious organic syrups made from real fruit and cane sugar. I tried the "lava flow" which is shave ice surrounding creamy ice cream.  I chose vanilla frozen yogurt topped with gummy bear. This sweet treat is a must for all!  Xoxo, Shelly
